£800 million over paid benefits
That's £800 million overpaid. For once claimants aren't being blamed, this £800 million has been overpaid during 2008-2009 entirely because of 'official error' by DWP staff. That figure has doubled since 2001-2002 when the overpayments due to 'official error' were £400 million. The amount of benefits being UNDERpaid has also increased from £800 million in 2004-2005 to £1.2 billion last year.
I wonder if we'll see the BBC making prime time programmes about this issue in the same way they love to do for benefit fraudsters? Somehow I doubt it....

There's an old saying when it comes to the press: "Dog bites man? That's not a story. Man bites dog? Now THERE'S a story!"
The fraud cases fall under the latter of those, sorry to say.
I'm trying to figure out why I have been paid an extra £200 for DLA and will have to start trying to give them it back but I know one or two people who have been overpaid and soon as they've realised they've tried to pay it back but aren't allowed to give it back until they get a threatning letter telling them to pay it back months later!
I've been lurking for a few days I got the link to your blog from the HMSA forum and have been reading through from the very start. I'll get caught up eventually, maybe
